In Lima, Peru, people who give out free newspapers or sell water and snacks on the on-ramps to the highway use these little wooden crates to sit on or put products on. To avoid carrying the crates home every night, they tie a rope between the box and the railing, then drop it over the edge overnight. This keeps them from getting cleared or taken because they're virtually invisible from the other side. The crates aren't that valuable, but it's probably a hassle for vendors to carry them around or find new ones every day.
